A norwegian writer held a speach in 1931 where he discussed the influence of the church and christianity in our world. His name was Arnulf Øverland. This speach is still good reading, and relevant to how  todays dogmatic conservative religious people try to slow down development and restrict individual freedoms. I haven't found a english translation so the link points to the original norwegian manuscript.
