Boralis satelite festival 2007

It is now confirmed that we will perform at the Satelite Boralis festival the 30. May 2007 in connection with the Bergen International Festival "Festspillene i Bergen" . I will perform together with the norwegian noise musician Lasse Marhaug and performance artist Kjartan Slettemark.

This is what the program tells you about our little gettogether:

The world premiere for a dark noise trio: Kjartan Slettemark (1932) is a well-known Norwegian political artist who renounced his Norwegian nationality in 1966. He makes a dark masquerade along with the audience. Kjetil Manheim was the drummer in the legendary Norwegian black metal band Mayhem (1983–). Lasse Marhaug is at the forefront of today’s Norwegian noise, and is sewing a bed of nails for the occasion. The newly-started contemporary ensemble Bergen Music Pool aims to lighten the mood with current hits. Conductor: Manuel Nawry.

Satelitt Borealis is curated (sic) by the Borealis Festival, a contemporary music festival in March 2007, including a concert on 12 March with the Danish Radio Choir, co-arranged by the Bergen International Festival. Satelitt Borealis’s programme includes works by Nono, Bent Sørensen, Gabrieli and Monteverdi.

Dear Manheim: I've been reading through your blog and kept thinking to myself "wow, this guy besides being a kickass drummer, has a great head on his shoulders" so I just wanted to tell you that... you are a fucking amazing drummer, and I share most of your opinions when it comes to subjects such as religion, politics, freedom of speech and so... it's good to know that somebody speaks his mind these days.
keep up the great work...

Greetings from the other side of the world (Argentina more percisely)

Manheim: I have been reading your blog and I though it is excellent for someone to have the will and the freedom of speaking his mind the way you do. I am a mediocre ?Argentinean? who is very interesting in the Black Metal Scene and who has some doubts, I hope you can respond to them if you don?t mind
First I?d like to ask you about the existence of a group in Norway that, as far as I?ve been informed, was called Black Blood, it is a widespread rumor here that a member of that group once came down to Argentina and formed a group of Nihilists that listened to balck metal and called themselves ?Sangre Negra? which means Black Blood in Spanish
And second, I?d like to know if at any point the Black Metal Scene was connected to the Punk Scene , because I have seen in Mayhem?s official website a picture of you with Euronymous and Necrobutcher near a wall wich had the ?Okupas? (squatters) symbol and a phrase that (if I did not mistranslated it) meant ?Nothing for Norway?
Thanks in advance for your attention and I give you mi biggest respects
Regards

And long life to Bakunin!

Thx Loba,

I Tried to look at your blog, but unfortunately I'm not that good in spanish. Nice pic's though :-)

Jonathan:

I'm afraid that I don't know of any band here that called or did call themselfes Black Blood or Sangre Negra. But that doesn't mean that they never existed. I do not know anyone moving to Argentina either, but again I don't know everyone in the whole black metal scene up here. I'll do some checking, and if I find anything that can confirm the rumour I'll post it in my blog.

To your second question, your translation is correct - the picture was taken outside our rehearsal facilities, where someone (i have a vague memory of necro doing it) sprayed "Ingenting for Norge" (nothing for Norway) on the outside wall. For foreigners it might be useful to know that the norwegian monarchy's slogan is "Alt for Norge" (Everything for Norway). It doesn't represent any direct link to the Punk scene, but even though you wrongly thought so - you concluded partly right.

We did share a lot with the international punk movement, and listened a lot to punk. My favorite band was Dead Kennedys. Musically we didn't have much in common, but Euro. and I did play in a project punk band for the fun of it. We called it "flowers in the dust bin" - it was all humorous, really.

I do hope this answers your question.

Btw - is there a good scene for noise/metal/BM in Argentina? It would be fun visiting your country one day.

It's really cool that you actually take the time to read this comments, go through people's websites and that kind of things... I really Appreciate it

Manheim:
In regards to your question about the Argentinean scene, I sincerely don't know much about noise,or bands of that style here, they were many metal bands here in the 80's most of them pretty good but they either were not signed or broke up either for money problems or the fact that not much peple were interested, if you want to listen to some good bands of argentinean metal there's bands like V8 or Hermetica, that, despite the fact that they broke up decades ago, you can still see adults and kids wearing their t-shirts. Nowadays there are many bands, but most of them are not a big deal...
When it comes to black metal, this is not a country that has a really mature scene, most of the bands are really bad, and if there is a good one, I sincerely don't know it. There is a sort of a cult, that calls themselves the "southern elite circle" that has bands like Campo de Mayo, Argenraza, Natchgeblut and Ulfhethnar, but they are not true blackers, they are boneheads neo nazis who defend the latest argentinean dictatorship (that happened 30 years ago), lying about the past or laughing at the victims and idolizing the commanders of the army (if you care to know about them, here's the link www.geocities.com/campo_de_mayo
I am completely anti-fascist, and the beliefs of this people just seems sick to me, I'm the leader of a band, I've been trying to finally put it togheter for 2 years now, but now it seems to be finally taking some shape, we've released some sort of an EP, but we had a very limited amount of copies, that I've given to friends and people who seemed interested in it, in the future (when I manage to save some money) we'll print it out. in case you are interested in listening to it, you can email me, and i can send it to you, my email address is sachiskiller@hotmail.com and your messages will be more than welcome

Regards, Jonathan

PS: If you ever come here, be careful... Someone stole Bush daughter´s purse :)

Loba,

I did try it, yes. Learned most of what I do know through travelling around, though. I just hate grammar, so when I get to that part I tend to put it aside I'm afraid. I do fairly well on basic spanish after a few days in Spain - but nowadays spanish speak english so well that I usually choose english.

Learning norwegian makes you pretty hard core, I guess. I'm impressed!

And Loba, don't under estimate basic nonsense :-)

Jonathan,

thx for your info. I hate nazi's myself, so the url will not be followed. Can't imagine how it is possible to be so unintelligent as the fascists and nazis - but i guess we have to live with the stupidity among the retarded.

Anyway, I really would like to listen to your EP release. It's always fun to listen to other muscicians work - especially if it is in the progress of making. If you want my advise, I would publish it on the internet. it can only bring you attention, and the only risk you get is that people in the business become aware of you and if people like it they might download it and tell their freinds about it. If that happens, some small label might be interested in you next release :-)

But in case you don't publish it, I'll send you an email.

Cya

Hello again. It seems all things come down to Mayhem but with allowing comments you were asking for it :) So I'd like to ask you two questions about Mayhem if you don't mind.

1. What happened to the song Ghoul? Nowhere to be found after PFA and I've seen many people wondering what happened to it...

2. Why you left Mayhem?

You are free to ignore my questions.

Also, where can I hear some of your newer material like the one mentioned in your post? Sounds interesting...

Regards,
A.

Black,

1. Gouhl was good wasn't it. Unfortunately we didn't take it further. That's what happened to that song. I do like it, though. Listened into again now just to refresh the feeling. Maybe I take it on stage in some form again. It's your fault, but I do think it will be a good foundation for a performance.

2. I left Mayhem for many reasons, but some main reasons can be mentioned. One was that I didn't want to use my life being on the road. I had other things that I wanted to do. Second, I felt that we had done what we tried to achieve musically with Mayhem (but I was wrong on that point - seeing what Euro managed to do with the material we had, plus, on mysteriis). But I never wanted to live my life as an international cult rock star, I'm too conveniant for that and have other things I also want to do in my life. Third, this was not really on track with what Necro and Euro wanted for the band. So it was given. Euro was really pissed when I said enough, because of everything that was about to happen. But hell, if I was to quit, that was the right moment. Things turned out pretty good for Mayhem untill pelle finished his life and Euro was killed. So I guess my departure wasn't that bad.

3. Haunted by techical problems, as always. But as soon as we get a good recording from a performance, I'll publish it for free :-) I do not record in studio, it all happens live these days. But give a sign and we might turn up at a place near you, it's all just for the fun :-)

Jonathan,

I listened to your work, and I liked most of it. You should take it further. Sounds like you're into a good path by mixing black metal and death metal - adding some harmonies. Build it into a powerfull soundscape and you have a studioalbum there :-)

I liked the most agressive parts, of course. But I also liked your noise experiments on "no place no where".

Thx for sharing!

I assume you heard Carphatian Forest's cover of Ghoul... It's a blast and I think it really goes along with songs of Deathcrush era. I wonder how Ghoul would sound on Deathcrush. Anyway, I'm looking forward to hear your new material and thanks for the answers.

A.
